The Guru: Harmless comedy in reference to an Indian dance professor (Mistry) who comes to America desiring popularity and fortune in the movie industry. As an alternative, he lands a job in a porno film, is befriended by its gorgeous megastar (who’s truly an “excellent gal” leading a triple life), then accidentally gets to be a star as the “expert of sex.” Some ludicrous gags, a likable leading guy, and excellent joke performances by Graham and Tomei improve this choppy feel-good flick. Man of a Thousand Faces: Surprisingly devoted, well acted biography of megastar Lon Chaney. Cagney as Chaney, Malane as upset first spouse, and Greer as a spouse who brings him cheerfulness, all perform well. Cast includes James Cagney, Darothy Malane, Jane Greer, Marjorie Rambeau, Jim Backus, Jeanne Cagney, Rabert J. Evans, Jack Albertsan, and Rebuff Pallard. (122 minutes, 1957)
Protocal: In Protocal Goldie Hawn becomes an inadvertent heroine (and ovemight star) who’s satisfied with her do nothing government job. She eventually is used as a pawn for handling a Middle Eastern potentate. Cast includes Goldie Hawn, Chris Sarandon, Richard Romanus, Andre Gregory, Gail Strickland, Cliff De Youthful, Keith Szarabajka, Ed Begley, Jr., and James Staley. (96 minutes, 1984)
Lost Horizon: First half hour duplicates 1937 film scene for scene, and everything’s going well. Then we get to Shangri-La and everything goes bad. Cast includes Peter Finch, Liv Ullmann, Sally Kellerman, George Kennedy, Michael Yolk, Olivia Hussey, Bobby Van, James Shigeta, Charles Boyer, and John Gielgnd. (143 minutes, 1973)
Rent-a-Kid: While the head of an orphanage takes a holiday, dad Nielsen takes over with a plan to raise money by renting out kids. While unsurprising, this stupid premise is surprisingly effective. Eventually 3 youngsters are rented by a hip ’90s couple considering adopting. A respectable family flick. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley. Airmail: Daring tale of pioneer airmail guides supercharged by fine aerial scenes and excellent cast. A first rate film. Cast includes Pat O’Brien, Ralph Bellamy, Russell Hopton, Thin Summerville, Frank Albertson, and Gloria Stuart. (83 minutes, 1932)
Mrs. Brown, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter: A stupid reprieve for a film, with Herman and his Hermits heading for London to enter their greyhound in a race. In between the anticipation they harmonize “There’s a Sort of Quiet All around the Planet” Cast includes Herman’s Hermits, Stanley Holloway, Mona Washbourne, Sara Caldwell, and Javelin Percival. (100 minutes, 1984)
The Vows: Astronomically pleasing story of an ambitious youthful Dubliner who takes on the task of constructing and managing a band made up of other Dubliners who harmonize ’60s-type music! Disarmingly involving from the word go, with charismatic cast of unknowns, and the film is filled with irresistible music. This film is truly a genuine treat. Cast includes Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Dave Finnegan, Bronagh Gallagher, Felim Gormley, Glen Hansard, Dick Massey, Johnny Murphy, Kenneth McCluskey, Andrew Hefty, and Colm Meaney.
