Buying a Used Mountain Bike? My Top Five Essential Tips

0

When you are starting out in a new sport such as mountain biking it can be overwhelming at first due to the sheer number of different mountain bikes available. My top five tips below will help you to narrow down the choices available and buy the right mountain bike to suit your needs.

Figure out what type of cyclist you aspire to be. Mountain bikes typically fall into one of the following categories: All Terrain Trail Bikes, Downhill (DH), Cross Country (XC), and Freeride.

Freeride mountain bikes are great for showing off your skills and tricks, but due to their heavier construction they are not suited to long trails. Cross Country or XC bikes are very efficient because they are constructed from light weight materials. The most specialized of mountain bikes are the Downhill ones that are specifically engineered for exciting downhill racing.

I recommend that if you are just starting out that you consider an All Terrain mountain bike so that you will be able to enjoy most aspects of the sport. It is highly probable that once you get some experience under your belt you will buy a more specialized bike such as a Freeride or XC.

When you start to look for a mountain bike one of the most frequently asked questions is Hardtail or Full Suspension? Seasoned Pros will have their opinions on this but for the most part if you are just starting out I recommend a Full Suspension mountain bike. As the name suggests Full Suspension mountain bikes have rear and front suspension and are arguably more comfortable unlike Hardtail mountain bikes which only have rear suspension.

Consider where you love as a factor in which type of mountain bike that you buy. Buying a Downhill bike is probably not a great idea if there are no steep trails nearby. Don’t be afraid to ask your local bike dealer to check what the mountain bike trails are like in your area.

Living in price sensitive times such as these consider used mountain bikes from online auction sites like eBay or Craigslist. This is a great way to break into the fantastic sport of mountain biking and by using the guide above you will be able to buy the right mountain bike to suit your needs.
