Uncle Sam is on your side when it comes to offering some tax credits for improving your home’s energy efficiency. Unfortunately, he’s only offering some credits and these come with a handful of strings. Still, a tax credit is better than no tax credit.

One of the things you need to know is that these credits can only total 30% of your expenditures for existing homes. Improvements for existing homes include metal roofing, windows and doors, asphalt roofs, insulation, air-conditioning systems, ventilation and heating, biomass stoves and non-solar water heaters. This is for up to $1500 over a two-year period, meaning that it will qualify for tax years 2009 and 2010. The credit does not apply to each year. The credit also only applies to one adult owner of the home unless each person files a separate income tax return. For example, if a husband and wife are filing a joint return, a single $1500 credit may be received. Two adults who are married or simply living together in the same house could receive these credits if they file income tax returns separately.

Longer-term and unlimited tax credits of up to 30% of the cost also applied. These have no upper limit and are good to 2016 for existing homes in new construction. Expenses may apply to solar water heaters, solar panels, fuel cells, small wind energy systems, and geothermal heat pumps. The tax credit for fuel cells is only limited to $500 per half a kilowatt of power capacity.

Note, too, that installation costs are only allowed for windows, doors, roofs and insulation.

And, to keep the confusion to a dull roar, you can only claim the tax credit for up to what you owe in taxes. Thus, if after other deductions you owe no taxes (even if you had tax payments withheld), you cannot claim the credit. And, if you don’t owe enough taxes, you cannot carry over the credit (unless you install the items under “longer term” described above.

However, you CAN claim the unlimited credit AND the $1500 credit if you meet the requirements for both.

You will also need to make sure that what you do qualifies for the credit; to do this, it’s best to check with the manufacturer or the company you are working with. You should get what’s called a Manufacturers Certification Statement that’s been signed by the company/manufacturer to certify that it has indeed qualified for the credit. And as with anything in relation to the Internal Revenue Service, make sure you keep documentation — receipts, the Manufacturers Certification Statement, and anything else you need — so that you have proof in the event you should be questioned on it.

When you file your taxes, be sure to include a Form 5695. On the latest draft version of the form, the energy tax credit appears on line 52.

Many retailers want you to sign up for their newsletter where they will send you information about their products. In order to entice you to join, they will often send you a one time discount.

Some stores will send out coupons to coupon sites because they know people will visit them. Usually once a coupon is on a site, they will be spread everywhere through word of mouth so no worries about not finding them.

It’s funny but having more friends will actually give you more coupons. How you may ask? Friends tell friends about deals and when there’s a coupon that’s great, they will tell you about it!

I signed up for my rental apartment’s mailing list because they always send me coupons to free coffee, yogurt or ice-cream. It’s amazing because it’s like free money.

If you see a coupon in a magazine, why not just buy it? It may cost you a few dollars but the savings you receive from the coupon is usually worth it. Furthermore, you get to read the whole thing.
