Everyone wants to be healthy today and typically that entails eating right, however a regular exercise routine is also imperative to one’s health. Fortunately, there are many different fitness activities to participate in today that will allow you to supplement your diet, however, many people stick to the traditional aerobic exercises and weight lifting. Although, there are other types of workouts that people participate in and enjoy besides the traditional ones including barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, pilates, and tai chi. And, the people today who participate in these type of exercises all seem to agree that not only are they effective, but they are also much gentler on the body.

The traditional workouts are often hard on a person’s body, especially as we get older. For example, aerobic exercise can be difficult on our bones and joints because it can cause stress to your body. Also, strength training is often easier for those who are younger and it gets more difficult as you age. Lastly, many of the traditional workouts are not as healing for our bodies, and although they may be healthy, they can induce injury.

For these reasons, many people consider participating in lower impact workouts that can also generate great health results for the body. Some people prefer these types of workouts to the more traditional workouts because they are not as rough on your body and they still allow for an exercise output. The most popular nontraditional workout routines that are catching wave today include barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, and pilates.

The barre workouts are probably the least familiar of the exercises listed above, however, they are great workouts if you want to condition your muscles. Although the exercises are performed using a bar and mirror much like a ballerina, any person of any age or fitness level can complete the exercises. In fact, there are many studios offering classes across the country where people can attend and improve their strength without having to use weights. Many people today testify in favor of the barre workouts saying they are extremely effective.

Yamuna body rolling, otherwise known as YBR, is a new exercise technique that centers on the use of 6 and 10 inch balls. The YBR workout is nothing like a traditional ball workout, because it focuses on your specific body type and the muscles you are targeting in hopes of achieving optimal results. When you participate in YBR, you essentially have your very own hands on practitioner that is working with you to stretch out your muscles. And, hopefully, the end result is a leaner figure, more flexibility, and elongated muscles.

Yoga, which has its origins from India, is arguably the most popular of the nontraditional exercises available today. Although yoga is a form of exercise, at its heart it is a form of meditation and it focuses a lot on the mental aspects of the individual in additional to the physical aspects that take place during the practice. Today, we practice yoga and the various asanas or postures when we attend a yoga class. There are actually different styles of yoga, however the most popular is probably hatha yoga.

Pilates was developed in Germany and it has become increasingly popular in the United States over the last few years. One of the biggest draws to pilates is that it is based on aerobics and yoga, therefore those who feel that yoga is too calm sometimes prefer pilates. When you attend a pilates class, the exercises focus on your center, or more specifically, your core muscles. Typically, you combine breathing exercises and poses – all at the same time focusing on the core.

Lastly, a great option for exercise today comes from China called tai chi, and the great thing about tai chi is the activity actually provides many health benefits. A tai chi class consists of a flow of poses that continue on interrupted. However, everyone can participate at their own pace and speed; therefore, it is noncompetitive, and all ages and fitness levels are welcome. For those who do attend regular tai chi classes, research shows stress decreases, flexibility increases, strength increases, energy increases, and your mood improves.

If you are tired of hitting the treadmill everyday or the weight room, one of these alternative forms of exercise might be for you. Many people participate and enjoy them everyday. In addition, one of the best benefits to these alternative forms of exercise is that they provide increased mental strength that is sometimes not offered when you are just going to the gym.
