Making Sure You Know the Basics About Backpacking
Backpacking is something that has become much more popular over the last few years. You can go back decades ago when to when it was called trendy to go backpacking across Europe, but now it has become a more affordable vacationing option as the people are trying to find ways to still enjoy themselves without spending a fortune. If you are considering backpacking on an upcoming trip, here are a few things that you should know about backpacking before you set off on your journey.
Making sure that your pack is filled with the right things is half the battle. There are necessities and then there are necessities. At the top of that list is a map of the area that you are traveling in and a compass. You can end up going the wrong way at any time. These two items will make sure that you get back to where you need to be.
Head to the drugstore and get yourself a small first aid kit. Since you are going to have to lug this thing around, you will not be able to carry too much, but there are plenty of kits that are ready made that are perfect and will come in very handy for basic first aid needs.
Extra clothing is something else to put in your pack. You are going to need this for three different purposes. If weather turns bad, you will need the extra layers. You will also be able to use it at night to create some extra warmth while you are sleeping. Finally, you never know what is going to happen on the trail and if you get covered in mud or something worse, you can at least get out of the wet clothing and put something fresh on while you clean and allow the other set to dry.
Sunglasses and sunscreen are more items that you want to make sure you have. If you are going to be on the trails all day, you need to protect both your eyes and skin regardless of what time of year it is. The sun doesnt care if it is summer or winter, it can still cause damage. Protect yourself and play it safe.
In order to make sure you have enough food, pack a little extra in your bag. Things like trail mix and energy bars will get you through the rough patches when you are still hours away from getting a meal. In addition to bottled water, you may want to use a hydration pack so you always have water ready to drink.
Fire is something people often forget and that you want to make sure that you are prepared to make. Do this with waterproof matches and firestarter. There is firestarter that you can purchase or you can make it up yourself out of things like balls of lint from your dryer. Keep all of these items in a sealed container to ensure that regardless of the weather or circumstances, they stay dry.
