There are paddles that are best for beginners though, and they are the ones that have little to no rubber. The more advanced you are the more you will want a paddle with thick rubber so as to be able to spin the ball better.

The better ping pong paddles have more rubber as well as a better type of rubber. Additionally, the handle and bat is thicker and made out of a more expensive wood. If you try playing with a cheap store bought paddle and then try playing with a paddle that cost $100 or more, you will immediately feel a big difference. The more expensive a paddle is the more it will give you a solid feel and you will be able to hit the ball back with much more spin and control.

The Butterfly company is one of a few big ping pong paddle makers that are highly respected. Butterfly makes custom paddles as well as stock paddles for all levels of play and some of them can get quite expensive. They also make table tennis tables that are used at the highest level in competitions.

However, if you are looking to buy a Butterfly Seemiller paddle or any other type of paddle, it might be hard to find in the US. Ping pong is just not a popular sport in America and it is difficult to find sporting outlets that sell the complete line of Butterfly equipment. Kids don’t grow up dreaming of becoming the next great American ping pong player and the popularity of ping pong has suffered.

You wouldn’t have this problem in China or Japan where the sport is much more popular and the good equipment is much easier to find. If you want to find a good paddle in America, about your only choice is to look for it online. You can find almost any paddle online and usually at a reasonable price as well but of course you can’t try it out first.
