Smurfs – Who And What Are They?

0

The popular comic cartoon The Smurfs was produced in Brussels in 1958 and created by “Peyo”. These undersized, blue skinned beings are living in some mushroom-like house inside Smurf Village, located in a clearing in the middle of a deep forest. Smurfs are very small, blue colored and their speech is distinguished by the regular employment of the word “Smurf”. Sarsaparilla leaves (Smurfberries in Smurf dialect) is their choice regarding food and their way of traveling is by hopping on both feet.

From a total of over 100 Smurfs most of them are male, very short, and blue skinned, wear white trousers and a white Smurf hat in the style of a Phrygian cap. Smurfette, Nanny and Sassette are the only female Smurfs in the village. In our days, a real industry was created based on their popularity, and all sorts of Smurf hats and costumes are available in stores.

The village is led Papa Smurf, a 543 year old good and powerful magician. Easy to recognize by his bushy white beard and red clothes Papa Smurf is an expert in making magical spells and potions. Also renowned for his wisdom and experience, he is the first Smurf to turn to when there is danger in the village.

Keeping in mind what their best at, the Smurfs are being given different tasks, contributing thus to the development of the Smurf society. They are given shelter, food and clothes with no money, as a reward. The Smurfs are named after their personality traits, such as Brainy and Clumsy or their occupation (Reporter or Handy).

Brainy Smurf seems to be an expert in everything, but he is usually wrong. He helps Papa Smurf in his laboratory and can be easily recognized by his large glasses. His best friend is Clumsy, a good hearted, baggy clothed creature whose hobby is collecting rocks. His name is obviously given by the fact that he is often tripped up by his own feet.

Reporter Smurf is the one bringing the news in Smurf Village. He is constantly looking for exciting subjects to write about in his newspaper, and has a tendency to look for controversial news, which eventually gets him in trouble. When printing an article he uses a printing press, managed by Handy Smurf. Wearing a pencil above his ear and being always ready to help, he is the one who repairs things in the village and he is also the inventor of remarkable technical inventions, such as Tele-Smurf, Weather Smurfing Machine and Smurf-mobile.
