Our own scientists have now confirmed the health benefits of consuming green tea by telling us exactly what ingredients in this drink do what. But what you likely do not know is that your used green tea leaves can be used in many ways around your home.

When you are finished using the leaves to make a cup of tea, put them in a strainer to drain out all the moisture. Put them out in the sunlight for a 2 days to get them totally dry. You should turn them after one day. You need your used green tea leaves to be good and dry so that they just crumble when crushed. You can now use these leaves in several ways I will list below.

Carpet Cleaning – Crush some dried leaves and sprinkle them onto your carpet. These crushed leaves will absorb odor. Leave them on your carpet for a few minutes and then vacuum them up. The leaves help fight bacteria and odors.

Gardening – Green tea leaves can also be sprinkled near plant roots and buried with soil as a natural fertilizer. In fact, a few companies sell dried tea leaves as a fertilizer. Save your money by making your own green tea fertilizer. The tea leaves will give your plants a nitrogen boost which will help them grow.

Deodorizing – Dried green tea leaves are a natural deodorizer. You can use them to deodorize various areas of your home. Crush them and sprinkle them on your dogs bed, then vacuum them up. You can put some in your refrigerator in an uncovered bowl for a few days. Some people even use them to deodorize their hands after slicing garlic or some other strongly scented foods.

Pillows – Some people swear that green tea helps them sleep. It might be the aroma that does this. So try making a pillow from the dried tea leaves. Rumor has it that green tea pillows will help you sleep better. The tea leaves will give off a light scent but not enough to keep you awake. You will need to open up your pillow and air it out once a week to let the moisture that comes from your breathing out of the pillow.

Good For Skin – You have probably seen green tea skin products. This is because green tea leaves are good for the skin. Some drug stores now sell green tea based skin products. Make your own skin product from your used green tea leaves! If you suffer from puffy eyes, you can put crushed green tea leaves in a small cotton bag and run water over it. Let the extra water drain off the bag, then lay down and place the bag on your eyes for a few minutes everyday.

These are just some of the ways you can take your used green tea leaves and use them in useful ways around your house. If you have discovered your own use for used green tea leaves around your house, write to me and let me know. If your idea is a good one, I will include it in the list above.
